Dropout Dan aka Daniel O’Dell grabbed everyone’s attention back in 2011 when he released his debut EP Do You Remember and now he is back with a new collection of tracks.

There have been a whole host of folk artists and bands releasing some great music over the last twelve months or so and with every release that passes this genre just seems to be getting stronger and stronger.

And Forever, Instead continues that fine tradition as this is a collection of tracks that shows more of a maturity of O’Dell as a scriptwriter as he shows off his prowess as a songwriter.

Oh Little Red is the first track on the album and it is a great introduction to O’Dell as a songwriter and a musician. It is a track that is packed with passion and is stripped back to allow his fantastic vocal to take centre stage.

The track is driven forward by an acoustic guitar and there is a real intensity that you can’t help but get swept along with.

Sentimental is the best track on the EP and is really does show off O’Dell’s unorthodox voice as he mixes soft and harsh tones.

Like The Stars rounds out the EP and it is another powerful vocal performance on a track where the production is a little less subtle than the rest of the songs on the album.

The only problem with this record is it is only five tracks wrong - I could have so easily have listened to a record that was five times this length.

Dropout Dan is an emotive songwriters who tells a real story with each of his songs and with this record he really does capture the intensity of his live performances.

Dropout Dan is an artist that everyone should be keeping an eye on over the next year or so because if he keeps producing music like this success will come his way.
