Marc Carroll makes his triumphant return this week with the release of his fourth studio album Stone Beads and Silver.
With this fantastic new record he brings together a whole host of sounds including country and Americana with a sprinkling of rock.
You really see those country influences in the opening track Muskingum River - which is one of the best tracks in this collection.
The first eighty seconds is a slow build as we get to hear Carroll’s deep and smoky voice in all of its glory before the guitars really kick in.
The country sound mixes with a twang of rock and it is one of these tracks that really just washes over you and pulls you along.
It has a really mesmerising quality to it and it really does show off Carroll’s song writing and vocal ability.
The Fool Disguised In Beggars Clothes, much like the first track, has a very rhythmic feel to it as we really get to hear how deep and beautiful Carroll’s voice it.
There is a real Western feel to this track and it just works so incredibly well and you also feel like it is building up to a shootout.
This album is not all about the Americana/Western sound as there are also fantastic acoustic tracks on this record - They’ll Never Find Us Here and being two perfect examples.
But what is so great about Carroll is he is such a vivid song-writer and he not only tells a story with all of his track but he creates a very vivid picture with every word that he sings.
If you are new to Marc Carroll’s music then Stone Beads and Silver is a great introduction to him as a musician and this is a beautifully crafted album.
There are quite a lot of artists out there at the moment incorporating that country sound into their music but the Americana and almost Western sound to some of the tracks on this album does set Carroll out from the rest.
There is not a single weak track on this record and it is truly fantastic from start to finish as Carroll demonstrates that he is a fine song-writer as well as a singer.
This is an album that really is not to be missed as records as fine as this don’t come along too often.
