Never stops surprising, each song is jam-packed with feel-good oddities.

I have heard of some unusual band names before but Mwahaha? Well, it’s each to their own I guess. It isn’t just the name that is slightly obscure about this band, it is also their sound.

The band consists of Ross Peacock and Brothers Nathan and Cyrus Tilton. The members of the band have been writing and performing together for ten years with different bands. Now they release their first self-titled album which is a collection of unusual electronic tunes that might not satisfy every listener’s ears.

Their sound is hard to define, fuelled by instrumentals rather than vocals, their music isn’t to my eclectic taste but it is certainly different and I praise the band for that. The instruments are filtered through an array of analogue synths and drum machines; with the added vocals this creates a distinctive and eccentric sound.

Bathynomus Gigantes is a ten minute long track with sombre beats, haunting vocals that only arrive three quarters of the way through and guitars coated in echoes and reverb. There aren’t many gems on the album but if I had to choose, it would be Rainbow Diamond and Swimmer. Rainbow Diamond is a swirling flow of pop and electronica, lengthened vocals that dip in and out of the conscious melody. Swimmer is a ballad with relaxed vocals and laid-back melodies.

The album is a mixture of Psychedelic melodies, electronic undercurrents and elated pop flourishes. Sleep Deep and Lime Tree have a tarnished feel to them, to be honest I couldn’t wait for these songs to be over because of the tedious melodies, there was no dynamism to a lot of these songs on the album.

Even though I didn't like the album there are many that do and some positive reviews include Impose magazine, who say that the album 'never stops surprising, each song is jam-packed with feel-good oddities' and Spin who say that the album is 'oozing, belching synths swarm beats that encompass throbbing funk and clattering chaos.'

It may not be my type of music but I do commend those who strike to be different in the music industry. I did enjoy listening to the album because I learnt to appreciate different genres of music but I personally didn’t feel inspired or lifted by their music and that is what I feel music should do.
