Sophie Hunger - The Danger Of Light

Artist: Sophie Hunger

Album: The Danger Of Light

OUT NOW

Rating: 3/5

This week sees the return of Sophie Hunger as she releases her third studio album The Danger of Lights as she tries to build her name and her fan base outside of her native Switzerland.

If you are coming to Hunger’s music for the first time then The Danger of Lights is a great place to start as this is an album that sees her mix a whole host of sounds from pop to jazz and back again.

There are some upbeat tracks but also some that are packed with personal angst and pain and it makes for an interesting listen.

Rererevolution is the opening track on the album and it is a track that is driven forward by the stark sounds of the piano while Hunger’s vocal is packed with emotion.

The piano is a huge feature of this album and she uses it so beautifully - and there is no better example than in Souldier.

This is one of the best tracks on the album and it will take more than one listen to really appreciate the beauty of the lyrics and the music.

The track starts out acoustically but eventually the beat kicks in to give it a little more of a punch. However there is a haunted sound to Hunger’s vocals and it is just a track that you can’t help but get drawn in to.

The jazz element to this album really kicks in on LikeLikeLike and this is one of the more upbeat tracks on the record.

This is a sexy and sultry track but she never overplays those qualities and keeps it on the side of light and playful.

LikeLikeLike couldn’t be more different to the two tracks that go before it and it great to sees this artist confidently show off her versatility not only in her writing style but also her vocal.

Das Neue and Z’Lied von Freiheitsstatue sees her sing in German but I have to admit that I was less taken with these tracks - while it does mix thing up a little they don’t really add too much to the record.

Sophie Hunger is a unique sounding artist who is not afraid to mix her sound as she moved from pop to jazz from haunting tracks to more upbeat songs - and this mix means you never know what is you are going to get from song to song.

This is a solid album from Sophie Hunger as she shows what she is all about as an artist with this new collection of tracks.
