Throughout the album his personal relationships are a dominant topic. This is encapsulated within future single ‘When You’re Mad’. Sure Cello hits move the track as Ne-Yo floats above, telling his woman that she’s even more beautiful when she’s mad, this is defined within the lyric, "Could it be the little wrinkle over your nose?"

Whether it is the organ-driven ‘Sign Me Up’, the dramatic ‘Get Down Like That’ or the tender soul of ‘Sexy Love’ from start to finish ‘In My Own Words’ is a dynamic debut album promising Ne-Yo is a unique talent that is here to stay. The UK release of the album also contains two bonus tracks.
