Irish rockers U2 have broken the record for the number of fans attending London's famous Wembley stadium - thanks to their state of the art stage sets.

The Beautiful Day hitmakers brought their 360 world tour to the U.K. on Friday and used one of their three elaborate claw-shaped steel structures as part of their show.

The mammoth set-pieces, which cost between $24 million (£15 million) and $32 million (£20 million) each, enabled U2 to squeeze more fans into the venue as revellers could surround the stage rather than stand in front of it.

According to concert organisers, 88,000 people descended on the newly-revamped venue - 5,000 more than the previous attendance record set by Rod Stewart at the old Wembley stadium in 1995.

U2's tour architect Mark Fisher this week announced plans to turn the stage sets into stand alone concert venues.
