Professional footballer and convicted rapist Ched Evans is believed to have been freed from prison earlier this morning, after debate was sparked over whether he should be allowed to return to his job.

The Welsh international player - who's halfway through a five-year sentence for raping a 19-year-old female in his home town of Rhyl - was whisked away from jail at 5am after jumping into the back of a silver 4x4 with blacked-out windows.

An onlooker who witnessed the release commented according to the Daily Mail: "It was a synchronised movement. The Mercedes turned up and then parked up down the road. It then reversed back at speed towards the jail exit.

"Then the prison door opened and the back door of the car opened. Ched then dived in the back and the car sped off."

His release comes after the criticism from Evans's family against the organisers of a petition against his return to football and anti-rape campaigners.

A petition has however now collected over 100,000 signatures calling for him to be prevented from making his return. Whether or not he will be playing again is still up in the air.

Judy Finnigan has been in bother this week after she said Evans should be allowed to return to the field as a footballer because his attack was "not violent".

She has since issued a statement apologising "unreservedly" for causing offence with her comments.
