On Facebook, you've always had the ability to 'Thumbs up' or 'Like' a post, but you've never been able to do the opposite. People have been calling for a 'Dislike' button on Facebook for years and Facebook has flatly refused all requests. At least, until now.

In a public Q&A session with Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO, he revealed that a 'Dislike' button will soon be coming to Facebook: "People have asked about the 'Dislike' button for many years ... and today is a special day, because today is the day that I actually get to say we are working on it and are very close to shipping a test of it."

The 'dislike' button might not be exactly how you have envisioned it, however. Apparently, Facebook's goal for the 'dislike' button is to "express empathy" like in the case where a friend shares a sad moment.

Reddit, the online bulletin board and self-titled "front page of the internet," uses a system where content posted is upvoted or downvoted by the community, but according to Zuckerberg this is not where he sees Facebook heading.

"We don't want to turn Facebook into a forum where people are voting up or down on people's posts," Zuckerberg said. "That doesn't seem like the kind of community that we want to create: you don't want to go through the process of sharing some moment that was important to you in your day and have someone downvote it."
