Gary Glitter today faced life in prison as he arrived at Southwark Crown Court for sentencing, after being convicted over a string of historial sex attacks against children and young people.

Early February saw him found guilty of having sex with a girl under the age of 13. He was further convicted of one count of attempted rape and four counts of indecent assault following a three week trial where he firmly and categorically denied all allegations.

One girl he tried to attack in 1975 was younger than 10 years old, whilst two of his other victims - 12 and 13 - were invited backstage by Glitter, isolating them from their parents.

The 12-year-old had been drinking Moet champagne, and was taken to Glitter's hotel room before she was subjected to a prolonged episode of sexual abuse in 1977, when he had sex with her.

He struck once more before the end of the decade, sliding his hand up the 13-year-old's skirt whilst she sat on his lap in his dressing room.

Walking into court, Gary waved to two of his friends in the public gallery, where a handful of his fans were also present, and entered the dock smiling.

According to one reporter, a single fan was sat flicking through an old Jackie magazine in the court, with pictures of the fallen popstar in it.

Speaking to Judge Macreath, Glitter's lawyer said that "He is a very different man now" as the former singer listened from the dock with the help of a lipspeaking interpreter.

At 11.15am, the judge left the court to consider what sentence to pass down on the disgraced offender, returning 20 minutes later to hand down the sentence.

Speaking to the paedophile, the judge told Glitter that his offences were "truly appalling" and that he had done "nothing" to atone for his crimes, stating that he had caused real and lasting damage to his victims.

He then handed down the sentence of 16 years, meaning that the convicted sex offender will be 86 before he is up for release.
