The 25-year-old passed away after injuries sustained while batting for South Australia against New South Wales at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Tuesday.

A distraught Michael Clarke broke the news reading a statement on behalf of the Hughes family, Clarke thanked St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney where Hughes was treated, his team mates and the general public for their support and wishes.

Since then tributes have poured in for the batsman.

Speaking on behalf of parents Greg and Virginia, sister Megan and brother Jason, Michael Clarke said: "We're devastated by the loss of our much-loved son and brother, Phillip. It's been a very difficult few days.

"We appreciate all the support we have received from family, friends, players, Cricket Australia and the general public.

"Cricket was Phillip's life and we as a family shared that love of the game with him. We would like to thank all the medical and nursing staff at St Vincent's Hospital and Cricket New South Wales medical staff for their great efforts with Phillip. We love you."

A clearly emotional Clarke then stood up and left the room.

The England cricket team, who are currently in Sri Lanka for a one-day series, have cancelled today's media conference after the shock death.

All Sheffield Shield matches were cancelled after Hughes suffered the injury. Cricket Australia faces a big decision on whether to go ahead with the opening Test of the summer against India next week.

Hughes, who was days away from his 26th birthday, played Test and one-day cricket for Australia, Sheffield Shield cricket for South Australia and county cricket for Worcestershire.

He made his Test debut against South Africa in 2009, making centuries in both innings of his second Test.

Hughes originally played for his home state before moving to South Australia.
