Research from the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) has revealed the UK's top office bugbears when it comes to our working life; a whopping one in four (23%) has considered changing careers or retraining in the past 12 months.

Our main reasons for wanting to move are to get more freedom and control (22%), escape draining office politics (17%), spend more time outdoors (20%) and just avoid being stuck at a desk all day (13%).

Does this ring a bell? We spoke to Sarah McMonagle from the FMB about how to make it through the daily grind with a smile.

Experiment with a change of scenery

Take a break or go for a quick walk - don't underestimate the benefits of changing your surroundings and making time for yourself. Many people aren't able to be active in their job and can feel sluggish. Simply stepping away from your normal workplace can help refresh your brain and lets you approach your workload with a new perspective.

Set your boundaries

In many jobs it can be easy to work late - especially if you have a culture of 'presenteeism', which can drain your productivity and motivation. Aim to set your own personal deadlines and stick to them - not only will it boost your work/life balance, but it also lets you structure your workload.

Stay positive

Learn to keep all negative talk away from the workplace. Small things like body language can have a real knock-on effect with co-workers, and you could be complaining more than you realised. Smile, stay away from negative sounding words like "don't" or "can't" and you will be amazed by the impact it has.

Challenge yourself

Set yourself personal challenges related to your job - ask for more training, read up around the industry, keep your mind active. Not only does this put the power back in your hands, but it might just spark an interest in a new field or reignite your passion for a part of your job you forgot existed.

Prioritise

Don't let your to-do list spiral out of control: prioritise your tasks, allocate realistic time to do a job, and try tackling the easy-wins first. It will give you a greater sense of satisfaction throughout the day!
