Over 70 per cent of men and women collectively say they would refuse a kiss on their first date.

Yet nearly one in ten men admit they are hoping for more with a ‘coffee’ at the end of the date, compared to only one per cent of women.

The research conducted by Windows Live Messenger surveyed over 2,000 people across the UK also reveals that six out of ten people have experienced a really bad first date.

Over 70 per cent of men and women collectively say they would refuse a kiss on their first date. Yet nearly one in ten men admit they are hoping for more with a ‘coffee’ at the end of the date, compared to only one per cent of women.

The research conducted by the surveyed over 2,000 people across the UK also reveals that six out of ten people have experienced a really bad first date. 

The First Date study, revealed Brits have been on an average of ten first dates and ranked bad breath and body odour as the biggest turn offs. People working in marketing, advertising and PR double the national average and clock 20 first dates. 

Twelve per cent admit they have been stood up and 12 per cent have allowed alcohol to impair their behaviour. 

Overall it appears that Brits don’t enjoy the first date experience with less than half (48 per cent) claiming to like first dates. As a result many are turning to technology to help them overcome their nerves before meeting someone for the first time.

In the last year alone decision engine has seen 34 per cent spike in people searching for dating online and Mysinglefriend has seen a 52 per cent rise in online profiles.

Darting Expert Andy Jones adds: "Modern dating is evolving at an astonishing rate, embracing all manner of new technologies. The boom of the last decade was speed dating - the chance for busy people to meet dozens of people in one night.

"Now we have cyber dating where you can view and meet your potential date over a webcam on technologies like Windows Live Messenger, meaning you only have to spare a few moments to see if you fancy them.”

Norwich is the first date capital with one in 10 people claiming to have been on between 21 and 50 first dates (only 2% of people from Northern Ireland can claim the same thing)

Only 3% of people from Derby Leicester and Nottingham have been stood up on a first date compared to 21% of people from Birmingham

Twice as many people expect a lingering kiss after the first date in Northern Ireland compared to East Anglia

7% of people from the Leicester and Nottingham expect to go back home with their date after the first date compared to just 2% of people from the Bristol and Brighton

Only 15% of Londoners think nerves are the worst thing about a first date compared to a whopping 24% of Scots and 26% of Welsh people

Marital Status
Almost 9% of divorced people have had over 50 first dates compared to just 3% of single and married people

AGE
Despite people settling down with marriage and children the number of first dates increase with age with over 55s having the most (15 first dates on average)

Profession
People working in marketing, advertising and PR are the most likely to date with double the national figure (an average of 20 first dates).

Students have been on the least first dates with an average of five

30% of people in telecommunications claim to love the first date experience while people working in Education are least fond with 38% disliking them

Those working in recruitment are least likely to want to go back for ‘coffee’ after the first date with (0%) compared to 18% of graduates and those working in the agriculture, fishing, forestry industry.
