At one time, a Date used to mean dressing to the nines and being escorted to an exquisite restaurant where one would talk for hours over a candlelit meal. Now, it appears that we prefer a simple drink in a casual setting.

Relationship site, eHarmony, quizzed 1,000 of their members and found that 65 per cent of women and 55 per cent of men agree that a simple, informal drink in a relaxed setting is more appealing than a romantic, candlelit dinner.

They also wanted to discover what was seen as the least attractive thing someone can do on a Date.

If you’re a woman, be very careful with your choice of dish, as 25 per cent of men said that they were massively turned off by women who order the most expensive dish on the menu.

Thirty four per cent of those surveyed said that they were turned off when their date didn’t order anything at all.

Although it’s commonly thought that women will often eat less on a date to appear more attractive to men, it appears that men are nearly as guilty as women, with 35 per cent of men admitting they eat less than they normally would when on a date.

Surprisingly, what you drink has an impact on how attractive you are to your date.

Men said that the only thing more off putting than a women ordering champagne on a date, is a women ordering a glass of milk.

Men don’t get off easy either. Twenty five per cent of women said the least attractive drink a man can order is a Pina Colada, saying that it is ‘too feminine’.

Jenni Trent Hughes, Relationship expert at eHarmony.co.uk says, “There’s an unwritten, unmentioned language that pervades through the dating process, where each partner is assessing the other against social norms, searching for similarities in attitudes, behaviour and in this case, even tastes.

“For example, in our times of austerity, an expensive date is not an attractive one. Being too ostentatious can leave your partner as cold as the dessert. To ensure your first date turns into a second and into a third, be conscientious about your choices but be natural and true to yourself.”
