What Is It?
It’s a new app that allows women to get out of awkward situations by giving them one liners in reply to the embarrassing catcalls. It was set up by the Metropolitan Action
Committee on Violence Against Women, who are Toronto based, to offer support from women who are being subjected to sexual harassment from leering colleagues to the builder in the street.
Once the app is downloaded, you can go into it and select from the menu who is harassing you and where you are. The app then generates a response for you to give to your harasser. The responses have been submitted by users and you can submit your own should you feel you have the perfect response to a certain situation.
We Love:
It’s a fun app, which is the main attraction. It’s great to have a browse through and some of the responses are pretty good, especially if you’re under pressure to give an answer to that leery colleague that hasn’t stopped giving you that funny look since day one.
Once a response has been generated, if you don’t like it or would prefer a better response then you can refresh the response to get another one. Another great feature is that it gives you little facts about sexual violence and harassment every time you generate a response.
It’s clear to see that this app was created to spread awareness about sexual harassment and violence, which is great in itself, but it also makes you remember that this isn’t something you should be subjected to wherever you are so it really does do its job!
It’s also great that you can add your own responses to the app for others to use.
Downfall:
Most of the responses you get are a little on the dull and obvious side. Anyone who has been victim to a stranger on the train telling you he wants to take you home to show his mum knows that ‘go away’ simply doesn’t cut it so it would be great if the answers were a little more inventive.
It’s currently only available on the iOS devices, so the iPhone, iPod and iPad, which means that android and blackberry users can’t get their hands on this app yet.
Verdict:
Really fun app to play around with, gives some good tips but most of all raises awareness which is something that makes this app great. Despite having some less than impressive responses, there are some funny, witty sarcastic ones that will give you a good giggle and hopefully and the app evolves there should be plenty more to choose from.
It’s a free download so there’s really no accuse not to download it and give it a try! It’s currently available from iTunes.
