The single life is often envied for its freedom and lack of responsibility but it now appears that singles aren’t to be envied as only 10 per cent of them are truly happy.

Out of the 10 per cent that claimed to be very happy with their single status, the majority was men, reinforcing the belief that women prefer companionship.

The majority of those surveyed by dating site PARSHIP said that they were neither happy nor unhappy with being single and sadly, 20 per cent said they were not happy at all.

The results when asked how happy participants were with their single status were as follows:

Neither happy nor unhappy- 31%

Reasonably unhappy- 28%

Not at all happy- 20%

Reasonably happy- 11%

Very happy- 10%

Markus Fischer, Director of International Business at Parship UK, said, “Despite stereotype often suggesting that men and women around the UK love living the single life, our results very much contradict this.

“Just one in ten singletons are actually happy with their single status, with the majority being men; quashing the suggestion that bachelors enjoy being unattached!

“At the end of the day, almost everyone out there would be unable to deny that they’d be happiest with a companion who’s right for them; and it seems the single life isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.”

The respondents were then asked about whether they felt happy with their sexuality. Worryingly, 11 per cent said that they were not happy at all.

The majority claimed to be very happy, followed by neither happy nor unhappy.

Out of the who said they were very happy, the majority were woman and from those who said they were not happy at all, the majority were men.

When asked if how happy they were with their sexuality the respondents replied:

Very happy- 32%

Neither happy nor unhappy- 24%

Reasonably happy- 17%

Reasonably unhappy- 16%

Not at all happy- 11%

Markus added, “To see that so many admitted to being unhappy about their sexuality was a concern, though. If anyone feels confused, or really unhappy about their sexuality then there is plenty of support out there to help them. After all, you only get one shot in this life, and spending it unhappy really isn’t worth it.”
