Contraception - Worth Talking About

Contraception - Worth Talking About is a new campaign from the Department of Health & Department for Children, Schools & Families designed to help young people make more informed choices about contraception, look after their sexual health and avoid unintended pregnancies.
The campaign aims to promote more open and honest discussions about sex, relationships, contraception and chlamydia among young people and with their parents and healthcare professionals.
Research shows that a lack of knowledge, and misinformation, coupled with poor attitudes and communication is currently hindering their safer sexual behaviour. For younger teenagers, the focus will be on gradually building their knowledge and understanding, and helping them to resist peer pressure to have sex before they’re ready.
A whopping 90% of women are unaware that they have so much contraceptive choice - there are 15 methods in all for women to choose from depending on their needs. It’s therefore conceivable that many of us are using methods that may not be the best option for our lifestyles or life stages.
Women get advice from their friends on a million things so why not explore what methods your friends are using? It might not be the best option for you but it might give you a few ideas that you can discuss with your GP.
Helen’s a great example of a young woman who realised that the pill wasn’t the perfect method for her and from speaking to her friends, decided to find out more about the IUD.
Helen Carnall, 27, IUD

‘I’ve just started a new relationship and my boyfriend and I were discussing contraception. I know from past experience that the pill isn’t the best option for me - I found it a hassle remembering to take it! A friend of mine uses the IUD and she suggested I chat with my doctor, who was really helpful and supportive and told me that I had more methods to choose from than I realised. Whilst the IUD suits my lifestyle now, I know that if anything changes in the future, I have other options. I’ve just had my six week check up and my body has adapted well to having the IUD. It’s a total relief not to have to worry about prescriptions or carrying pill packets with me and I’m really happy that I explored my options.’
