Men aren’t as fussy as women, with only 30 per cent of them saying they are influenced by a woman’s financial stance.

MoneySupermarket found that 45 per cent of women would like to know what their potential partner’s finances look like before they make any decisions regarding a relationship, and that the results would influence their decision.

Debt is a concern for both sexes with 38 per cent saying they would base the decision to enter a relationship with a person upon this.

Over a third said that someone who has debt is a massive turn off and a further 50 per cent found debt to be off-putting.

Kevin Mountford, head of banking at MoneySupermarket said, “Whilst many may like to flash the cash to entice their other half, it seems being sensible with finances, having a secure job and a good grasp of money may improve your chances of finding Mr or Miss Right.

“Our research shows that during these tough economic times, the state of people’s finances is impacting whether the relationship will continue or not.”

In a typically British fashion, one in ten people keep their finances a secret, refusing to tell their loved ones about their financial situation.

On the other hand, 19 per cent of Brits like to be honest and open about their finances, telling their other half all about after just a month of dating.

Worryingly, 20 per cent of Brits admitted to keeping either a secret bank account separate from their partner, or hiding money from them in other places.
