Body hair on men is traditional a sign of manliness but it seems that women would much rather have a men without a rug across his chest, enjoying the man with a small amount of body hair much more.

Researchers from Slovakia has found that a massive 80 per cent of women prefer men without masses of body hair.

To discover how hairy women like their men, the researchers took a man with his chest full of hair, showed him to the women and then shaved his chest and asked the women to say which they preferred.

Only a tiny 20 per cent of women said that they liked the look of the man when he had a full chest of hair.

Despite a large portion of women saying they prefer the hairless look, there is no explanation as to why they feel this way.

It’s been a mystery as to why we do not share the same amount of hair as our closet primate relatives but the most prominent theory is that women chose less hairy mates to avoid bugs and lice.

This new study shows that theory may be incorrect, as women preferred smooth skin regardless of the parasite risk.

The study took women from both Turkey and Slovakia, countries which differ in parasite threats and yet both women preferred the hairless look.

Pavol Prokop, a professor of biology at Trnava University in Slovakia, told the Daily Mail, “According to evolutionary view, hairless men should be preferred, particularly in areas (or cultures) with high parasite threat, which means close to the equator, where parasite richness is highest.

“We compared only two countries that differ in parasite threat, but we found no differences in women's preferences.”

The research, which was published in the Journal Archives of Sexual Behaviour, has inspired the researchers to repeat the study in different cultures to see if the results differ with Pavol Prokop saying, “More cross-cultural comparison is needed to solve this question.”
