Madonna

Madonna

As Madonna celebrates her 56th birthday (born on 16th August 1958) today we take a look back at her relationships over the years to two of Hollywood’s brightest stars.

Madonna’s first husband was actor Sean Penn, whom she married from 16th August 1985- 14th September 1989. Still to this day he refuses to talk about his ex-wife, even after her 1989 album ‘Like a Prayer’ that had a song wrote about their marriage, called ‘Till Death Do Us Part’. One of his only quotes on his previous wife was;

I met her on the shoot of that video ["Material Girl"]. Madonna had done "Like a Virgin", so she was a phenomenon, but nothing could have told anybody what would happen next. I describe that marriage as loud. That's how I remember it. And frankly, I don't recall having a single conversation in four years of marriage. I've talked to her a couple of times since, and there's a whole person there. I just didn't know it. (IMDB)

He also told Lynn Darling back in 1991; The Madonna stuff just made it clear. After it was over, I could see what was left that I was in control of. I'm very fond of my ex-wife, but at 24, I didn't realize the difference between a great first date and a lifetime commitment. (IMDB)

In 1985, the pair starred together in Shanghai Surprise, which received nothing but criticism. She dedicated her third studio album to Penn, called True Blue- in which she called him the ‘coolest guy in the universe’ (IMDB). After a couple of stints in jail following Penn’s outbursts at a photographer, the got divorced in 1989.

Madonna then married Guy Ritchie on the 22nd December 2000 at Skibo Castle in Scotland and Gwyneth Paltrow was her maid of honour and Matthew Vaughn was their best man. The entire wedding cost the couple 1.3 million and they booked out all 21 rooms of the estate for their guests.

Madonna’s wedding dress was designed by her friend Stella MaCartney.

Ritchie was quoted after their big day; ‘I can understand that the whole world is interested in my wife. That's even why I married her.(IMDB)

Their son Rocco John was born three weeks early via emergency C-section on 11th August 2000 in Los Angeles and then the pair adopted a Malawain boy name David Banda Mwale Ciccone Ritchie who was born on the 24th September 2005.

On 15th October 2008, the media began to speculate that they were going to split, which was later confirmed by their spokesperson.

Despite how the media portrayed the couple, Ritchie maintained that; ‘We are not that flash, me or the missus. In fact, we are quite low-maintenance.’ Their divorce settlement begged to differ however.

On 15th December 2008, a divorce settlement was made in which each party got 50-60 million which included their London Pub and Wiltshire Estate in England.

When it came to the children, Madonna and Ritchie decided to divide their time equally so half of their time was spent with Madonna in New York and al with Ritchie in London.
