There are many preconceptions about what men and women should and shouldn't do around the house- but a new study has found that the traditional stereotypes no longer apply.

Relationships on Female First

Relationships on Female First

The survey revealed that men are doing tasks that are classed as typically 'female' such as vacuuming, making the bed and doing washing. Women on the other hand are putting the bins out, mowing the lawn and sorting out the attic- things usually attributed to men.

When couples were asked who does the household chores- 86% were happy to report that it is shared between them. Only 11% said it was done by the lady of the house, 3% said it was done by the man of the house and 1% were brave enough to admit neither of them do any chores at all.

Sadly, even for those couples who both chip in- when asked who did the most chores in the house- 67% said it was still left to the female.

Finally, couples were asked what they would consider a male and female domain of the house. Female areas were the kitchen, garden and the shed. Men's were the garage, the bathroom and the shed.

Helen Turnbull, spokesperson for www.hillarys.co.uk, made the following comments about the results of the study:

"We often hear that work and domestic duties are now shared and everyone is on an equal footing - and that may be true for some, but it's clear that for the majority of couples, women are still doing the bulk of the housework. This may not come as a big surprise to us, but seeing the divide in the chores is certainly a talking point. How many ladies can relate to hauling the bin bags out the door in the morning?"

She continued:

"It's particularly interesting to see how couples who share the work have their separate domains. Surprisingly, the shed is now woman's territory, while men seem to spend more time in the bathroom. Could that be due to the involvement of smartphones and mobile technology, we wonder!? Whatever's causing the shift in territory and labour, there are definitely new trends emerging in the home that we haven't seen before."

The poll was conducted by the team at Hillarys, www.hillarys.co.uk.
