We all have times when we are a little bit smelly- especially in the current heatwave. After a hard day's graft for instance, it's acceptable for there to be sweat and inevitably smell. This is easily washed away with a cooling shower. But what if your partner insists on wearing an aftershave every day that you can't stand? Do you diplomatically bring it up with them to make another choice- or buy them a new one so they might take the hint? Apparently- many women have another approach to this problem.

Elysian, found that 68% of women have dumped a partner because they despise the smell of his aftershave. 52% did this after their first date- implying that ladies have a low tolerance for scent incompatibility.

One of the reasons that women end a relationship (that might have blossomed otherwise) is due to a fragrance that they are unable to stand or their date's fashion sense.

These findings opened a can of worms because they also found 54% of men don't like their partners perfume either and 41% said they hate the way their partner smells. Ouch.

Victoria Louise, spokesperson for Elysian, said: "As society becomes fast paced and our social interactions are shorter than ever, first impressions are becoming more important. One of the first things we notice about somebody - often subconsciously - is the way they smell.

"But despite that, if you ask many people what fragrance their partners wear, they're not sure. And even more importantly, when people look to buy perfume or aftershave as a present, they have no idea what to buy and often just opt for whatever is currently on the bathroom shelf.

"It seems most people could confidently choose clothes or music for their partner, but when it comes to fragrances we struggle."

As a result of their findings, Elysian has launched a unique new ' Fragrance Finder,' which matches people to suitable scents based on their personality and whether they'll be wearing it for special occasions, or as an every day fragrance.
