77% how are in a relationship put their relationships status as single and the remaining 23% tick the relationship box while they are not in one. We take a look at the reasons Brits give for lying about their status over social media.

'I still want to be desirable to others' - Whether this is an ego boost or an intention to move onto someone else, people do it to remain emotionally and physically available to future suitors.

'I'm looking to have an affair through social media' - For those who aren't subscribed to an extra marital dating site, having 'married' or 'in a relationship' on a page can put people off pursing something further with someone so this takes down that perceived barrier.

'I'm embarrassed by my relationship' - People do a lot of Facebook stalking and perhaps the discovery of who you have chosen might encourage gossip, if your partner has an abrasive personality.

'I don't think the relationship is serious enough to broadcast it yet'- Pressing that button too soon could scare off your new partner into thinking that you are moving too fast.

'I want to keep my life private' - You don't want people looking at your page and then navigating through to your partner's. It's an invasion of privacy- they should be able to make a decision of why they connect with someone Facebook.

Only 29% of Brits' partners know that they have been guarded about their relationship on social media, whereas a whopping 71% don't know or haven't noticed when logging onto their own Facebook account.

George Charles, of VoucherCodesPro.co.uk, said the following:

"Wow, I really am speechless after those results! I think it's really unfair for Britons to lie about their relationship status on social media and would really urge those who do so to reconsider their actions.

"Not only is it unfair to your partner to lie about your relationship status, but it could have serious repercussions on your relationship if they found out. Also, anyone else you decide to communicate with via your social media accounts, you are speaking to them under false pretences, which is unfair."
