The theatre might not be the most obvious date night choice, but going at least once a year on a special occasion or scoring some cheap tickets could actually help your relationship- here’s why:

It’s something different- if you’re in a rut of going to the cinema, watching TV or going out for a meal on your date nights- this will change up your routine and give you something new to experience together.

It feels like a treat- It’s a little more costly than a take away or a cinema outing, so when you go to the theatre, you are likely to appreciate it all the more because it’s a rarity.

It gives you something new to talk about- If your conversation has become a little samey- whether you loved or hated the performance- it’s something you know you will be talking about afterwards.

It’s making a memory- As you probably don’t get to do it all that often, it’s something you won’t forget. Going to the theatre requires planning, travel, organisation, and takes up a whole evening- and with that much invested in it- you know it will be firmly fixed in your mind for many years to come.

You get to dress up- Let’s face it- most places you frequent probably wouldn’t frown at casual attire. In the theatre, this is your chance to shine for each other by putting in a little more effort to add to the sense of occasion.

You are witnessing a story unfold together- You are sharing the experience of watching something filled with emotion. Whether you’re laughing, cheering or crying at the sight before you- you are going through those emotions together and that will only bring you closer.

There’s pause for thought- The interval is always a great opportunity to grab a drink, talk about the performance and what you are looking forward to in the second instalment.

It might inspire a new hobby- If you enjoyed your theatre trip- it might encourage you to do another… and another. Perhaps your date nights will look very different in future if you get the bug for culture.

It’s once in a lifetime- The performance you go to see might be repeated hundreds of times again for different audiences across the globe- but the night you go is unique to you as a couple. No two performances are exactly the same- that’s the beauty of live theatre- so you get to experience something organic together.

It makes your heart beat in time with each other- Research shows that romantic couples synchronise their hearts so that they beat in time with each other. Their coordination has been linked to trust[5], empathy and liking of each other[6]. This suggests that the unified response seen during the live theatre performance can help to break down social differences and bring people together.
