Today is World Penguin Day and these little guys have a lot to teach us when it comes to how to live, laugh and love. Here’s what we can learn from their example.

Relationships on Female First

Penguins know the way to their partner’s heart- Penguins give their intended a rock. Not just any old rock- they spend a long time looking for the perfect one. When the male has found the pebble he’s been looking for- he gives it to his companion and she pops it in her nest. Pebbles are so important that male penguins often fight over the prettiest ones.  Find out what makes your partner’s heart sing and woo her with it.

Communication- Penguins natter between one another and we all know how important talking is- from the simple things to the more important topics, it’s good to get it off your chest.

Monogamy- Penguins choose a mate and are monogamous to them for as long as they are both alive. Choose your partners well and monogamy will come easily because you will never look at another person in the same way again.

Cleanliness- Penguins are always taking dips into the water to cleanse themselves. Make sure you take care of your own personal hygiene and like penguins who chase each other around in the water- there’s nothing to say you can’t chase each other around the bathroom and enjoy some time under the shower head together!

Spend time with each other- Penguins spend large amounts of time with their partners unless their responsibilities take them away- like when one penguin has to hunt for food in the winter. When you are together and not at work- use the time wisely because it won’t be long until you have to be apart again.

Long distance relationships do work- Female penguins journey out to sea for the winter to fatten up and provide sustenance for their baby- leaving the male with their egg to look after in the freezing cold temperatures. Relationships are about taking turns and doing what is required of each of you which can mean time apart. If you love each other- the one who leaves will always come back. And the one who stays should always welcome their significant other home with open arms.

Be responsible- Once the honeymoon period is over- relationships require a level of responsibility- more so if you decide to have children together. Like penguins- humans have to know where it’s safe and where it’s dangerous to go with their family and they have to be productive to provide a home and food for each other.

Take stock of what you have- Penguins like to stop and think in their surroundings. You often see them take a moment to have a good look around. This is one of the best things we can do as humans- think about what you have- too often we take for granted how lucky we are- it’s about time we stopped and counted our blessings.
