Doodle has found that we are a nation of liars when it comes to our friends; with half of Brits cancelling on their mates each month. So what do we tell our friends we are doing when we try to get out of a prior commitment?

Have you told a lie to a friends to stay in?

Have you told a lie to a friends to stay in?

Top 5 lies Brits tell when cancelling plans:

I'm too ill- No one wants to spend the night with someone who's vomiting, pooping incessantly or complaining of a headache- it's the perfect excuse.

It's my nan's birthday - I can't get out of it- Despite the fact that you probably missed it last year to go to something you actually wanted to, this year the tables have turned and you use family to get out of something you're not in the mood for.

I have to look after a sick family member- Even though they are perfectly capable of hauling themselves to the toilet and getting their own glass of water because they are FINE.

I completely forgot!- You have admittedly seen umpteen updates on Facebook, received texts, talked about it with your mates and put it in your diary- but still- it slipped your mind.

I was so tired I just fell asleep- Because that usually happens at 7.30pm on a Saturday night- you're so rock and roll.

Clearly, these excuses are a load of bull- so we find out why people really take a rain check.

Top 5 reasons Brits actually cancel plans:

I was too knackered- Doing anything other than sitting on the couch or in bed with some food and a DVD seems unachievable.

I couldn't be bothered- Being sociable is not on your list of priorities today, neither is getting dressed up or smiling.

Completely broke- Water is not really appealing when everyone else around you is drunk as a skunk.

I had double booked myself- Simply put- the other offer is way better than this one.

I wanted to see my boyfriend/girlfriend- Decisions, decisions- stand around making nice with people you don't really know/ like listening to the same old stories OR have sex with your partner. It's a tough one.

When it comes to the gender divide, women are more likely to tell a lie when they cancel and 25-34 year olds are the worst offenders when it comes to fabricating a story.

Michael Brecht, CEO of Doodle said; "It appears that Brits would rather tell a few elaborate porkies than confess their lame excuses for bailing on their so-called mates. With better planning and a little more honesty, we're more likely to keep our friendships and our conscience intact."
