Confused.com found that paying for anything from a romantic meal to a taxi to get your loved one home can cause resentment towards your partner.

It seems that love really is on the rocks in Britain as the second resented expenditure is a person’s own wedding and third was buying presents for someone else’s wedding.

The most shocking part of this study is that expenditures that weren’t as resented as the previous ones.

Things such as pitching in for a work colleagues birthday cake, paying for plastic bags in supermarkets and road tolls didn’t even make the top 10, despite being things that are constantly being complained about.

The results shows that those from the South West are the least romantic region in Britain with 20 per cent of them saying that spousal expenditure is the most irritating.

There is hope if you’re from Wales, as they were voted the most romantic will only 10 per cent of them claiming that they resent spending money on their partner.

Those from Yorkshire were seen to be the most happy to spend their money on expenditures, with those from the South West being the most likely to tighten their belt and refuse to dish out the cash.

Nerys Lewis, money expert at Confused.com, said, "Forget 'for richer, for poorer'. It seems when times are tight many Brits are simply saying "I don't" when it comes to bailing out their better half.

"However, while it seems like romance could be in recession, many adults could be realising that love doesn't have to cost a thing - instead choosing to romance their partner for free with a good old fashioned stroll in the park, for example, or cooking a meal rather than eating out.

"What's more, we feel many people are simply getting smarter about how they spend their cash making traditional money gripes such as car insurance and utility bills less of a bother as people shop around to get the best deals."
