Communications Director at Cupid gives us some advice on the rights and wrongs in the online dating scene as it can be tricky if you’re just doing it for first time!

Online dating has become increasing popular given that there are so many sites out there to choose from. To save you the hassle of turning up on  date with someone who are not compatible with on any level then read the following!

It is important to know what it is that you want to achieve by online dating, such as what kind of person you would like to meet up with. This will make the process a lot simpler for you later down the line. Pick your sites accordingly, a mature dating site, or a professional dating site for example to target the people you are interested in and avoid disappointment.

You are often offered either a free account or a subscription, to make sure if you are subscribing that it is to the one you actually want and suits your lifestyle. From this you can have a look at all the other single people and test the functions for the site before putting any money down. You would not want to subscribe to a mature dating site if you were looking for someone else who works in a uniform and unsociable hours for example.

Picture

Make sure that you pick a picture that you are happy with but also one that has a true likeness! It may sound obvious but some people heavily photo shop their pictures to make reduce wrinkles or make themselves look thinner, however if your date turns up and doesn’t recognise you from your picture then this can cause problem from the outset.

Try and find one of you that is unique, one that would be noticed on a page full of other faces. You can normally change the picture so if you upload it and find that it is not working then you can put another one up. Try not to use picture of landscapes, as they may look nice but people have little interest in those when they want to find out about a prospective date!

Profile

The profile includes basic information, such as your name, age interests, hobbies, books, likes and dislikes. If your writing flow has dried up then simply bullet point everything and leave it up to someone to contact you to find out a bit more. Be honest, if you lie in the first few moments of meeting person, even if it is online this does not bode well for the future. You could perhaps state what you are looking for in a date such as marriage, kids etc., so if someone is viewing your profile they can easily see if you will compatible or not.
