When it comes to surprise treats, 42% of men have never received a gift from their girlfriend, with 18-24 being the guiltiest age group. Women who live in London appear to be the least generous with their wages, as boyfriends from down south haven't had anything from their partner throughout the entire year.

Could this be because of the cost of the gift women think men want?

Women believe that if their partner were to want a gift, it would be something techy- the most recent 'it' gift, which may be out of many a woman's budget.

Cost aside, women are generally worried about their man's screen time and so feel even less enthused about getting them a new gadget. Could this be the reason that they rate their partners as average or below average? Because they never get to see their face? Or because their partners are spending so much screen time they are paying less attention to their looks?

Women would much rather shower their boyfriend with gifts of cooking, an activity, a new hobby or a weekend away. British ladies just want to spend more time with their partners doing more worthwhile things. With only a third who rate their partner as 10 out of ten, more women are having to think of ideas that bring them closer to their partner rather than driving a wedge of an I pad or Phone further into their relationship.

Man About Town columnist and dating, sex and relationship expert Andy Jones comments: "With many women thinking their boyfriend would love the latest gadget more than anything, it seems what we really want from our partner is simply to spend time together. Investing in each other's hobbies is a simple, fun way of doing just that."
