Romantic Gestures: The Do’s and Don’ts

Romantic Gestures: The Do’s and Don’ts

We see it all in Hollywood films, men going to great lengths to be romantic and impress a lady, hoping they will fall madly in love with them.

Unfortunately, in the real world, some romantic gestures take it a step too far and end up looking pretty creepy!

Cupid.com have taken inspiration from some of our favourite romantic movies and created a list of do’s and don’ts when it comes to romantic gestures.

Romantic Gesture Don’ts

• In ‘Love Actually’ Hugh Grant’s character goes door to door searching for a girl who used to work for him. Definitely a no-no to track someone down you’ve just met, and even more so if you used to be their boss.

• In ‘The Notebook’ Ryan Gosling’s character is so obsessed with his childhood sweetheart that when he grows up he builds the house she dreamed of as a teenager, then lives there alone and depressed. There was a happy ending, but this is a bit much!

• Romeo and Juliet – Leonardo Di Caprio climbs a trellis to peer into Claire Danes’ bedroom, trying to get her attention. Definitely grounds for a restraining order. And don’t forget their double suicide.

• ‘Fighting for her’ – punching another guy in the face will rarely convey your loving feelings, it’s not romantic and no one likes a violent guy.

Romantic Gesture Do’s

• Surprise weekend away – Bridget Jones was over the moon when Daniel Cleaver whisked her off to the countryside, and providing the trip doesn’t end the way hers did, this is a great way to stir up some romance.

• Singing your loved one a song like Heath Ledger in 10 Things I Hate About You - Done publicly this could be pretty embarrassing, but if you can hold a tune, why not? It worked for Heath.

• Write a love letter – So much more romantic that a text message and particularly thoughtful if you’re in a long distance relationship. In ‘Dear John,’ John and Savannah continue their relationship through letters and it helps keep their love alive.

• So simple, but flowers and chocolates do always go down well.
