A new survey has revealed that almost one in five men and one in twenty women have visited a prostitute at some point in their lives.

The socking new study, which was commissioned to celebrate the DVD launch of Secret Diary of a Call Girl - Season 2, polled over 2,000 guys.

As part of the candid survey investigating the secret sex lives of Brits, just over 17 per cent admitted to paying for sex at some stage in their lives, with 30 per cent saying they do this regularly.

The study also found that 20 per cent of men think paying for sex makes it more exciting and more than a quarter would do it if they could afford it
 
What’s more, 27 per cent of men questioned would be happy to join if they were on a stag night where everyone else visited a brothel, even if they wouldn't dream of doing it at home.

Almost half of guys interviewed admitted they wouldn't class sleeping with a prostitute as cheating on their partner but women aren't quite as understanding with three quarters of the 2,000 women questioned saying they would never forgive their partner for sleeping with a hooker.

Whilst the poll reveals that men are admitting to paying for sex, whether it’s a one off on a stag do or on a more frequent basis, it also shows that it’s not just men who have paid for sex. One in 20 women have visited a male prostitute and another 15 per cent have fantasized about sleeping with one.

One in ten women also claimed they would be happy to use a prostitute to spice up their sex life. The fact that one in twenty girls have admitting to sleeping with a male prostitute also shows there has been a clear shift in attitudes towards paying for sex.

However, it’s not cheap to do so and the average guy would be prepared to pay just over £128 for sex with an attractive call girl.

It was also revealed that of those who have visited a prostitute, 22 per cent have used an escort agency, and another 24 per cent have answered a personal advert
 
Another 71 per cent have visited a brothel, either in the UK or while they were abroad and one in five even admitted to picking up a girl off the street.
