New research from Canoodle.com has shown that, above all else, having the same or similar interests are what makes a relationship work.

One of the main interests that has to be shared are the views for the future.

Two thirds of women said that a relationship wouldn’t work if they had different feelings about starting a family.

The men weren’t far behind, with 49 per cent agreeing with the women.

Just under two thirds of those surveyed said that although looks can be important, look alone won’t make a relationship work.

A third of Brits said that they would look for someone with the same interests as them when looking for a partner.

Four in ten people said that having a wildly different career to your partner can impact badly on a relationship.

Surprisingly, more men than women said they would struggle if they lead a different career path to their partner.

Sean Wood, Communications Director at Cupid Plc, said, “No one wasn’t to date a carbon copy of themselves, but a shared hobby, or shared views can go a long way towards a long and happy relationship.

The majority of Brits said that if they didn’t have a single shared interest when on a first date with someone, they wouldn’t go on a second date.

Yet, despite interests being important, 89 per cent of people said that compromise is also key to making a relationship work.
