It's the classic first date - a night at the movies with a tub of popcorn, accompanied by dinner or drinks.

But spending two hours sat in silence with your crush can throw even the most confident daters, wondering what will happen when the credits roll. With little to go on than body language and the occasional whisper, you've got to get it right.

Don't worry though - we've got you covered. From popcorn no-nos to back row blubbering, here's Marie Cosnard, Head of Trends at dating app Happn, with her top tips for when the lights dim.

Careful what you pick…

"First up, don't fall at the first hurdle - a recent Happn poll revealed that a third of people believe a date's film choice could be a deal-breaker!

"Avoid horrors - it's too obvious and contrary to popular belief, only 6% of people think it's a good first date genre, so hold on to the scary movie snuggles for another time. And a romantic epic might be that bit too intense.

"Your safest bet is to pick a comedy. Not only does it lift the mood from the offset, you can also learn a lot about someone's sense of humour by what makes them laugh, so if you find yourselves chuckling at the same scenes, you're on to something.

The old 'yawn and stretch'

"FYI, it's not a good idea and sets you up for what could be a very painful rest of the film.

"Best to take it down a notch and go for the occasional 'accidental' popcorn hand graze to gauge their reaction. If your date pulls away, give them their space - if they linger, maybe scooch up a little closer, but enjoy the anticipation and don't rush things.

Popping the kernels

"Speaking of popcorn, what's a good movie without some nibbles? Go indulge in some theatre goodies! Just watch out for slurping the last dregs of a neon-coloured slushie or the wafting scents from a hot dog - you face a one in three chance of embarrassing your date with smelly or noisy food.

"A few playful flicks of popcorn to break the ice is fine, but also remember you don't want to get into a full-blown food fight!

No multi-screening

"Whether it's on silent or not, keep your focus on the one screen and put your phone away. More than half of people think texting or being on your phone is the biggest faux pas on a first date at the movies so resist the urge to update your Facebook status.

"Talking through the film is generally a turn-off too, so choose your moments wisely when whispering into their ear. And falling asleep means game over for one in ten dates, so maybe think to top up the caffeine tank if you're running low on energy."
