The findings show that women are more sensitive than men when it comes to putting a stop to a relationship. Men are a little more brutal- their favourite being "it's just not working." At least they make their point succinctly.

It would seem that women are more worried about sugar coating a break up than men to preserve their soon to be ex-partner's feelings.

Men like to tell it how it is even if the reason is not what a woman wants to hear- like having met someone else.

A bad sex life is far more important to men than women when ending a union.

Women are also more likely to end a relationship face to face than men, however both sexes are resorting to emails, phone calls and texts now to tell a lover they no longer want to be with them.

llicitEncounters.com's spokesperson, Christian Grant, said that increasing numbers of online daters jump quickly from one relationship to the next.

"They meet someone they like, have some fun and then quickly move on. If you are going to be successful with online dating, you have to learn how to end a relationship without causing too much fuss. Men could learn a lot from women in the art of letting a partner down gently. Women are far more likely to find euphemisms to sweeten the pill, stating that it is a 'relationship' failure, dissolving their partner of the blame. Men have much less imagination, opting to tell their partners exactly what has gone wrong."
