We've all been told to be one time, avoid talking about your ex and not to be rude by friends, family and the experts on first dates. It would seem that we've missed a few potential slip ups according to EliteSingles' new study. We take a look at the top five.

Five surprising first date faux-pas

Inviting your date for a fancy dinner

82% of single Brits prefer to keep things casual- so opting for a coffee shop rather than a fancy restaurant for your first meeting will take the pressure off. You can both dress in your normal clothes, not have to worry as much about your table manners and get to know the way each other takes your hot drinks.

With that said, even if your family dinners are casual affairs, don't take your first date to one- 81% of singles agree this is the worst idea. Leave this until you've been dating a few weeks at least.

Being smelly is worse than being late

It should go unsaid- but people expect their date to have showered before they meet them. If you're running late, let them know and take down the pace so you don't turn up a hot, sweaty mess.

Getting out your selfie stick during dinner

For one in four British men, they see this as far worse than them not offering to pay the bill. You can probably see your date's face on their profile between your first few meetings if you miss what they look like. Taking pictures on the first date is for one thing and one thing only- bragging rights and no one wants to be the reason you get a high five from your mates.

Listening intently to your dates stories

Dates where two people sit in silence never end well. This is your opportunity to get to know each other and show off you and your personality. 76% of singles hope their date does most of the talking so the old 'be a good listener' is not redundant but if you're a chatty kind of person- this is one of the times it's welcome.

Adding your date on Facebook

21% of singles would be inclined to turn a second date down if after the first date, that certain someone added them on Facebook. All the info you need right now is on their profile- give your date nights (and each other) a little privacy before everything goes up for the world to see.
