You talk about the endless possibilities for the room in question- Should you do all the same colour wallpaper? Have a feature wall? Paint instead of wallpaper? Carpet? Laminate flooring?

If it's the spare room, will it be study? A game room? A nursery? A walk in wardrobe? So much choice- such different ideas.

Go to the DIY store and samples- None of which you can agree on but you take sheets of wallpaper or samples of paint home anyway in the hope your partner will come around to your favourite when you put it on the wall at home.

Pick a time to start- You agree on a weekend, weeknight or take holiday in order to get this mammoth task done with a mixture of excitement and trepidation because you know what's coming. The ultimate relationship test.

Get everything ready- Only to find there's something really important you've forgotten and have to go back to the DIY store.

Argue over who forgot the thing- The guilty party has to go and get the missing item as punishment.

Figure out who's in charge of what- Who will paste? Who will paper and most importantly- who has to tidy up afterwards?

Get in each other's way- You struggle to find a rhythm when you first begin and get under each other's feet. Then wonder if you really need a nicely decorated room after all.

Get into the grove- You find yourself feeling confident about your excellent teamwork and fantasize about setting up a business in painting and decorating together.

Then something goes wrong- The wallpaper is upside down, a whole can of paint drops all over the floor or you accidently lean against the wet gloss. Then you come back down to earth with a bang and realise that what you do to earn your crust is probably better suited to you.

Marvel at your beautiful creation- You stand together and think all the blood, sweat, tears and risk of separation was worth it.

Put everything back- All the stuff that once resided in the room- has to return at some point. So much care and attention has gone into the decorating- everything now has its place and you vow to keep it tidy always.

Move on- The novelty wears off quickly. You've barely put your decorating clothes away and start thinking about the next big project.
