Relationships on Female First

Mark Habben, Senior Zoo Keeper, ZSL London Zoo is letting us in on what we can learn from the animal kingdom to help spice up our dating lives, enjoy!

1. Choose your romantic gifts wisely

Birds are particularly good at providing personal gifts and adorning their territories with elaborate decorations. The most well-known of these is the Bowerbird, the male of the species often presents his female mate with flowers. We tend to greet our loved ones with flowers, chocolates or jewellery but try to be more original and by putting some thought into the gesture and come armed to your date with something simple and thought provoking from a previous conversation or date – this way your partner knows you’ve been listening.

In the wild, Malayan Black Hornbills take this art of romance a step further by luring a female into a nest with gifts of food and then closing her in it to protect her from rivals and predators.  We wouldn’t recommend showering your loved one with gifts just to warn off potential threats but it may just be that added bonus you were looking for…

2. Sing your heart out

We all remember plastering our bedroom walls with pictures of Take That and Backstreet Boys or still get excited by the guilty pleasure “One Direction” so is there something more to this vocal attraction than meets the eye? Yes, boy or girl bands tend to be good looking but is the act of singing making us go weak at the knees?

Singing is used by many species for attracting a member of the opposite sex. Red billed toucans are very vocal around the breeding season, calling loudly and continually in the hope of attracting a mate. Calling isn’t just restricted to birds, however. Male Sumatran tigers can be heard “chuffing” - panting loudly and frequently to show his intentions and hopefully get a positive reaction from the object of his desires.

This might sound similar to us humans, when men use the old-fashioned wolf whistle tactic to get the attention of a female passing by but to many this is more of a turn off than anything else – so be warned guys, ladies are not impressed!

3. Wear bold, bright colours and stand-out in the crowd

Men and Women tend to wear brightly coloured clothes in the summer to attract attention from the opposite sex but the same can also be said for many members of the animal kingdom.  The stunningly beautiful and extremely endangered Edwards pheasant male utilises his colourful blue plumage to good effect. Many beautiful fish species at ZSL London Zoo also incorporate bright colours and elaborate displays to attract females.

This tactic works a charm so don’t hold back on the adventurous side of yourself; if you feel comfortable in what you’re wearing it’s more than likely that your partner or date will find you attractive, too. The colours on the outside help with the initial attraction but it is the confidence to pull them off that keeps your date wanting more.

4. Show off your talents but know your limits

All males show off, regardless of their species and this is especially true in gorillas; the males will run around, throw things in the air and create a real stir to capture a female’s attention. Sound familiar? How many times have you had to walk away when someone was trying too hard and it just ended up being pure offensive? Be confident, of course, but don’t cross the line of cockiness to arrogance as your date will feel like your babysitter as opposed to your equal.

5. Woo your date with your scent

One of the most important stages of getting ready for a date is choosing your aftershave or perfume. The wrong scent can completely give the wrong impression and turn your date off completely.

However, if you have your own scent on tap you can definitely use it to your advantage. Tigers and lions have a distinct scent associated with them due to their individualized scent glands. This scent serves to identify particular individuals, allowing them to leave their scent to communicate with one another regarding its territory and belongings. Take your time when next reaching for the Chanel or the Hugo Boss and think about how the strong overpowering scent will come across to your date. As always, subtlety is key.
