Away from any noise!

Away from any noise!

Yelp has found that only 11% of first time daters choose to go to a chain restaurant for their initial eating encounter but instead select an independent place to eat. So Yelp (the online urban city guide and app, which helps people find great places to eat, shop, drink, relax and play) has come up with their top ten date tips for finding your ideal venue:

The ex- Dates are hard enough without running the risk of seeing the ex out with their new squeeze or with their friends, so find somewhere that is the polar opposite of where you used to frequent together.

Funds- If your are paying all or half then make sure that you can afford it as there is nothing more embarrassing than saying ‘it’s my treat’ and then taking it back when you are short. Check out some reviews first or the online menu to gauge how much it’s going to set you back.

Background noise- Check out where you are headed for is not having a live music session that night or your valuable conversation might be drowned out by everyone around you.

Variety is the spice of life- Have a few locations up your sleeve- if there is something that doesn't suit in one you can always go to the next alternative- it also makes you look spontaneous. If your date is indecisive don’t do the same- pick somewhere and don’t dawdle.

Avoid the rut- You don’t want to get in one of these early on- that is for later :) so don’t always go back to the same place- it gets predictable and boring and shows that you have no imagination.

Avoid the chain reaction- Going to a chain means familiarity and expectation- chances are your date has been there and done that with a previous date, friends or family. Going somewhere new makes you both open to new experiences and put you on a level playing field.

Always be prepared- Check out the location for the place beforehand so you know where you are going either walking or to tell your taxi driver. Ask if your date has any special dietary requirements- no point in going to a pizza place if they are lactose intolerant!

Don’t trust star ratings- Check out the full reviews for they give you all the info you need- the best dishes to try or offers on particular nights of the week.

Mid way point- Don’t meet somewhere that is very close to your house, similarly don’t do it too close to theirs. Near you, it looks like you are not being considerate of their travelling time; near them suggests that you might expect to venture back to theirs for a night cap.

Book in- There is nothing worse than being stuck in a queue with someone you barely know- it makes you look ill prepared and forces awkward conversation- often about having to wait. Misery loves company.

Elliot Adams, Senior European Communications Manager at Yelp comments: "When it comes to impressing on a first date, location is key. Independent restaurants and bars beat chains hands down for a memorable experience, so take your date somewhere off the beaten-track. Whether it's that local Italian restaurant or that old pub on a backstreet, you could increase your chance of a second date by trying something other than well-known chain outlets. With familiarity being identified as the most frequent excuse for choosing a chain restaurant or bar for a first date; those singles need to be more adventurous and take a step into the unknown yet much-loved world of independent businesses. Yelp helps take the guess work out of finding that perfect local spot and offers access to millions of user reviews and insights, pointing you to the best businesses in your area.”
