When Groupon launched its first fictional dating service GROUPID on April Fool’s Day, they learned a lot of Brits yearn to go on a date.

Originally pitched as a diabolical scheme that forced people to go on dates to cash in on their Groupon deals, a day later, over three thousand people had signed up to the service and nominated a friend for a deal and a date with a complete stranger. So what does this say about how desperate we all are to have successful dates? We’ve put together the top five ways to make a date count below….

  1. 1.       Do something fun, but easy to do

Step one – choose something fun to do but that won’t terrify your prospective partner. Going to the cinema will do nothing but create an incredibly awkward two hours, but climbing a rock face may make things a little too intense. Something that breaks the ice but doesn’t break your back is ideal, such as bowling, going to a sporting event or a comedy gig. The key thing is making sure you can talk about whatever it is you’re doing, and break the ice as quickly as possible.

  1. 2.       Make interesting conversation, but not too much

Silence never chatted anyone up. But remember – filling the slightest gap in conversation with whatever comes into your head can make you seem a bit manic. The trick is to be engaging, witty and to discuss interesting topics, without prattling on like a salesman. Remember – silence can be a weapon in your quest for romance. A little silent tension on the walk home can lead to a lingering kiss – but standing there speechless is no way to woo anyone.

  1. 3.       Use your imagination

You know what’s not attractive? Boredom. If you’re going to use an anecdote, make sure it’s funny. Nobody ever found Prince or Princess Charming by moaning about their line manager or data entry problems. You’re in pursuit of the love of your life – so act like it! One lothario’s trick you could try is offering your date three sealed envelopes with three separate date ideas in – or do something they genuinely wouldn’t do at any other opportunity. Groupon offers a whole range of experiences from dancing classes to weekends away – why not chance your arm and try a date you’ll never forget? It could be the last first date you ever have to have!

  1. 4.       Look and smell good

This should be obvious, but don’t go to the gym just before your date or arrive from work with your hair frizzed up from a day of frantic running to and fro. Give yourself enough time to get spruced up, look good, have the perfume deployed, and to make your journey in good time and not have to run and thus create a last minute sweatmageddon. Again – you’re looking to potentially meet the love of your life, so look good while doing it!

  1. 5.       Leave them something more

Ultimately, this is a question of control. Just because you can watch an entire series of telly online doesn’t necessarily mean you should – fatigue is a real issue, and you can ruin some of the best plot twists by getting to them too quickly. Do you want the epic tale of the romance you’ll one day tell your kids to be a page long? The first date is only the front cover –less is definitely more when it comes to first dates.

There’s no hard and fast way to make a first date a success – but doing something fun, having good conversations and not walking before you run will help you get there – and remember, for those of you wanting good ideas, there’s always groupon.co.uk.
