This week is set to be the busiest week ever in the UK for online dating, according to Match. Millions are expected to log-on to dating apps and websites as Britons return to work after their festive break.

With online dating continuing to grow in popularity in the UK, Match is predicting registrations to rise by at least 75% during the month of January. The vast majority of Match users also now access the site using their mobile, meaning users will be more active than ever before.

Kate Taylor, resident relationship expert at Match, comments: "Singletons often stride into Christmas feeling quite smug. No arguments or in-laws - just single jingles all the way. But after spending the holidays surrounded by family, couples, Richard Curtis films and mistletoe, having nobody to pull the other end of your cracker can start to take its toll." With this in mind, she has offered her top 5 tips for New Year dating.

* Definitely cash in on the flood of new daters. If you've not created a profile before, do it now! It's simple and quick, and it doesn't cost a penny to search for gorgeous singles in your area.

* If you have created a profile before, go back and freshen it up. Add new photos, and update your text. Editing your profile will put you back at the top of search results.

* Put past setbacks behind you. 2016 is brand new, you haven't made a single mistake yet. See it as a clean slate and mentally rebrand yourself: you're not a failure if you're single, you're just single; and this is the year you can change that.

* Rediscover the joy of going on dates, simply for the pleasure of getting dressed up and meeting someone new. Stop seeing dates as a means to an end - enjoy the whole process. That attitude will make you unstoppable, and a really lovely, fun person to be around. (Which will lead to more dates.)

* Spend time with happy, optimistic friends who'll support your online-dating adventures, not your witty-but-cynical pessimistic mates. If you can enlist a single friend to join up with you, even better. You can cheer each other on before every date, and have someone to share your success story.
