Just lovely!

Just lovely!

We talked to Amy Coles, brand manager at Uniform Dating.com who told us what the attraction to a man in uniform is and why as women we somtimes feel the opposite when wearing a professional badge.

Why are doctors and nurses the most appealing uniformed partners?

We recently polled the British public’s perceptions of the qualities and characteristics of those in uniform alongside our members at Uniformdating.com. The results revealed that doctors were the most attractive, followed by nurses as they were viewed as caring, empathetic, loyal and honest. These are very desirable characteristics for a partner.

When looking for a potential partner, a job can represent someone’s personality traits and doctors and nurses have great attributes which can be transferred into relationships.

Why is intelligence so important to potential dates?

When people are looking for love, generally they feel at ease with someone of their own intellect. However this isn’t necessarily down to IQ. It’s much more likely to be based on how “interesting” they are to the other person. It could be emotional intelligence, interests, hobbies, personality. They all add up to intelligence in the eyes of the beholder.

Why could it be that nurses feel they aren’t taken seriously?

One in four nurses in the UK feel that their uniform isn’t taken seriously which is surprising when they are a skilled, well qualified workforce that dedicate long hours to their often stressful job. Often the problem rests with that fancy dress, “Carry On” image of those in uniform. We have Barbara Windsor to thank for that! It’s a stereotype that’s lasted for decades and it’s false. Most of the general public haven’t spent much time in hospital so they probably don’t understand the day-to-day duties of this sector either.

What is the appeal of a policeman?

We found that 37% of respondents from the general public thought that police officers would be good in an emergency situation; 32% thought that they would be physically fit and a whopping 49% thought police officers would be loyal, reliable and honest.

The police are our knights in shining armour, appearing when we are feeling vulnerable to help sort things out. They have to be courageous and yet sensitive to highly charged emotional situations. They must take difficult decisions quickly and have the strength of character to deal with some of the horrors they face. Have a police officer as a partner makes us feel safe so it’s no wonder they were so appealing to our respondents.

How attractive are the armed forces as potential partners?

Armed forces are the third most attractive sector to date. Similar to the police force, the armed forces are viewed as courageous and brave and 61% of Brits noted was that the armed forces have a high risk and dangerous job.

Interestingly,    37% of respondents in the armed forces worry that they are perceived as having an opportunity to cheat, whilst only 10% of the public see this as a problem. This reflects the stress that being away from home can cause in military relationships.

Why do you think that the armed forces worry that they are perceived as being unfaithful?

It takes a very strong and dedicated couple to overcome periods of time apart and so it’s no wonder that many of those in the job worry about their absences from home.

Yet, I am sure that military relationships are some of the strongest relationships there are. They need to be built on the foundations of trust and a mutual understanding of the pressures of the job. The good news for military wives is that they have the support of their peers and they build very strong networks to help them cope. And for those away on duty, they must certainly worry about their loved ones getting on with life back home.

How can these perceptions affect someone’s potential to find love?

We can see from our findings that people who work in uniformed professions have some fantastic traits that make for great relationships.

However there are hurdles too. Working long hours and shifts can affect someone’s ability to meet potential partners and date at mutually convenient times. Just imagine trying to meet someone when you are away on duty for six months of the year. In fact, it was for exactly that reasons that uniformdating.com was established – to create an environment for this in these pressurised jobs to meet each other and to meet others who understand their work and truly recognise the qualities of the person within the uniform. These are real people, in real jobs. It’s not fancy dress.
