Valentine's Day on Female First

But what do the Women of Britain really think of this celebration? Is it nothing more than a scheme, allowing retail stores to make money? Or is it that one special day of the year, dedicated to love.

Creating an online poll to get an idea of what women really think of Valentines Day, it was soon clear, that the women of Britain are ambivalent towards February 14th.

- Hannah Ashton, 22, Bolton, said: "Valentines day is an occasion to remember the good times and reflect on time with a loved one.

"Making it romantic and thoughtful for your man doesn’t always have to be materialistic, as you should love life together. The day always makes me come back to the thought that life is for enjoying not enduring."

Emily Sorton, 26, Brighton, said: "Valentines Day? No thank you, I think this year I will spend it in bed, alone!"

Charlotte Skeen, 19, Derbyshire, said: "Personally I believe Valentines Day is just another sad reminder to us single ladies, that we are alone. A total waste of time, or is that just me being bitter? "

- Charlotte Barlow, 21, Stoke-On-Trent, said: "I think its more of a girly thing, a time for him to buy me flowers and chocolates, I couldn’t go out and just buy him a teddy bear could I.

"I do think Valentines Day is a bit overrated anyway and unfortunately I wont we wont be spending it with each other this year as he is away."

Ross Haughton, 23, Wolverhampton, said: "I could honestly say I don’t care a lot for the day. If I did have a man, I would buy him a gift we could both share."

Ben Lanny, 27, Leeds, said: "Valentines Day is just after Christmas when people aren’t spending money. Corporations make it a big deal with all the cards and presents to speed up the economy, just like Easter with all the chocolate eggs.

"If I were to pick a present, it would be as simple as a night in with some great company."

- Hannah Horton, 21, Stoke-On-Trent, said: "One year he took me to a fancy hotel, we went out for a lovely meal, and then made the most of my miss massage outfit.

"I believe the day isn’t a scheme to make money, I think it’s a day to appreciate the one you love.

"The best gift I have ever given would be taking him and his friends to aerial extreme for the day, he was a very happy man, and this made me happy."

Ryan Clayton, 20, Manchester, said: "I do feel its important that ‘love’ is celebrated, but then you have anniversary’s for that and if you can't show you love someone throughout the year then it's very unlikely to be love.

"You should show the love you share for one another day in day out, of course it's hard after marriage to keep the romance there, so in that sense it's a nice day to celebrate."

- Hannah Allsopp, 20, Glossop, said: "I once bought him a rose and a bag of mini eggs?"

Reece Winters, 24, Walsall, said: "I love Valentines Day and as for the perfect gift.... Sex, after she’s been spoilt all day long.

"I mean come on, that's the only way the day balances out to benefit the two of us.  Right?"
