Beaverbrooks the Jewellers asked Brits about their worst Valentine’s Day experiences. It’s no surprise that bad gifts like a tin of baked beans, an ironing board cover or a live tarantula will end in disaster. Or indeed a lack of effort, gifts and cards. The following people might argue that they had a much worse time of things on what was supposed to be the most romantic day of the year. Gifts or lack thereof was the least of their worries.

Valentine's Day on Female First

The woman who scrapped the whole idea...

‘My car broke down on the way to a date and I ended up spending the day at the scrap yard.’

The man who missed out on chivalry classes...

‘We had a huge row in the pub where we were having a meal and my partner walked out and drove home, leaving me in the pub to pick up the bill and get a taxi home!’

The woman who got lovesick without spending any time away from her date...

‘I was sick into a napkin at the table during the meal.’

The couple who had a 'dirty' date but not in the positive sense of the word...

‘We had a lovely meal, and decided to go for a walk afterwards around the lake. After a while we decided to head back but we got lost. My boyfriend thought he knew a short cut which involved going up a steep hill. I was wearing heels and the hill was very wet and muddy. My heels got stuck in the mud and I fell down the hill and got completely covered in mud. To top it off at the other side of the hill I had to scale a 6ft fence in my filthy clothes.’

And… the guy with single-minded wanderlust...

‘He booked a holiday to Austria and forgot about me.’
