Men are often thought to be the main culprits when it comes to cheating but new research shows that women are more likely to have a fling than men.

Four in ten women were found to have had a fling with another love interest whilst being in a relationship, compared to only 12 per cent of men.

Just because men hadn’t acted upon anything, doesn’t mean they hadn’t thought about it, with three quarters saying they had considered having a fling whilst being in a relationship.

Worryingly, even more women has considered a fling, with 85 per cent admitting they had given it thought.

And it wasn’t just one night stands, women also ranked higher when it came to having a full-blown, long term affair.

Only 4 per cent of men said that they had had a long term affair, whereas 14 per cent of women admitted they had indulged.

Unsurprisingly, 18-24’s were more likely to have a one night stand, whereas the older generation would have an affair.

Anthony Wright from Casuals dating site, who conducted the research, said, “It shows that while older adults are involved in long-term relationships, they're not necessarily with the person they originally intended.”

Despite the research showing that women are more likely to cheat, Anthony has a feeling that women are simply more honest about their intentions.

He said, “These figures are the complete opposite to what we were expecting. Alternatively, they could just mean that women were more honest about their dishonesty!”

But at the end of the day, he believes that everyone should be open to do what they want and there should be no judgement.

He said, “People's relationships do go stale, it's a fact of modern life, but who are we to judge if they look for a bit of excitement on the side?”
