Britain's Duchess of Cornwall was rescued by two kind-hearted hill walkers when she fell and broke her leg in April - and rewarded them with two crates of champagne.

Britain's Duchess of Cornwall has rewarded a pair of kind-hearted walkers with two crates of champagne.

Camilla - the wife of Prince Charles - was out hill walking in Scotland in April when she took a tumble and broke a bone in her left leg, leaving her in plaster for five weeks.

They took one look at me in this hole and said, 'Oh, it's you'. They were so kind. They stayed with me the whole time - and not one word to the press. I was so grateful I sent each of them a case of champagne.

However, the two good Samaritans helped the duchess to safety, took her to hospital and stayed with her while she was seen by doctors.

At the time of the accident, it was reported a police protection office assisted her and she did not have an X-ray until the following day, but at a recent black-tie dinner the royal told fellow guests about the two people who rescued her.

She said: "They took one look at me in this hole and said, 'Oh, it's you'. They were so kind. They stayed with me the whole time - and not one word to the press. I was so grateful I sent each of them a case of champagne."

The details were revealed by her husband Prince Charles in an interview with Vanity Fair magazine, where he also praised his wife, calling her his "eyes and ears".

He added : "Having somebody who obviously supports you and is on your side and understands is hugely valuable. And anybody who has that knows only too well it makes the whole difference. She's my eyes and ears as well."
