A former aide to Britain's Sarah Ferguson who was on the run from prison has been arrested.

Jane Andrews, a former dresser for the Duchess of York who was serving a life sentence for murdering her lover, was picked up by taxi driver Darren Auckland close to HMP East Sutton Park in Kent - from which she had fled in the early hours of Wednesday morning - after being hired by her parents to take her back to Grimsby, Lincs.

However, upon recognizing the identity of his passenger, Darren refused to make the trip, instead dropping Andrews, her parents David, 82, June, 79, and brother Jonathan, 44, to a nearby budget hotel, before calling police.

There was no way I was driving a killer back to Grimsby. That was just not going to happen. I wasn't going to get involved.

He reportedly told a friend: "There was no way I was driving a killer back to Grimsby. That was just not going to happen. I wasn't going to get involved."

A source at the hotel said Andrews signed in as 'K Andrews', while her family used their real names.

The insider added: "The taxi driver rang the hotel 15 minutes before they checked into check room availability. The four of them arrived together looking really tired. The older man did most of the checking in and paid for the room in cash."

Andrews - who had been on the run for three days and is now believed to have been placed on suicide watch at London's tough Holloway prison - parents and brother were "spoken to" by police and not arrested, while cab driver Darren said they had his sympathy.

He told Britain's The Sun newspaper: "I'm no hero. I don't take any delight in any of this. They don't deserve any grief. They are lovely people. I hope things turn out OK for them."
