Royal News Jordan’s King calls for end to suffering

22-06-2006 14:11

Jordan’s King Abdullah has called to end suffering around the world. The monarch joined Nobel Prize winning author Elie Wiesel during a peace conference in Jordan.

During the second summit of its kind, Abdullah addressed international representatives in a speech, concerned with Global problems like Middle East conflict, terrorism and child suffering.

Last year’s (05) conference, entitled ‘The World in Danger’, saw a variety subjects being discussed, but, according to the speakers, not much had changed since then.

Elie Wiesel was quoted in the World Peace Herald newspaper as saying: “Sadly, the situation has remained unchanged. There is still danger. The sub-title for this conference should be "A quest for hope."

During the conference, Abdullah addressed the audience with a speech about economic development in third world countries and called for better peace governance in war-torn regions.

He said: “Lasting peace will only come, if based on international legality.

“But nothing will prevent progress more than standing by and doing nothing. "The path forward will evolve through your ideas. The leadership that all of you bring is vital.

“Around the world people want to know that the 21st century will deliver what was promised - a global justice that is real.”

Weisel – who addressed the crowd after the monarch – paid respect to king’s political opinions and brave nature.

He then went on to voice his concerns over continuous global warfare. He said: “Old and new infectious disease is still raging in too many lands. If hatred is answered by hatred, when will it ever stop?

"What has to happen to change human nature? The name of the greatest peril hanging over our future is indifference.”

He also called for attention on child suffering, nuclear proliferation and suicide terrorism.
