Nepal's former King Gyanendra is "very perturbed" by the state of his country a year after the monarchy was abolished.

In his first statement since he was deposed last June, Gyanendra - who turned 63 yesterday (07.07.09) - expressed his concerns about the lack of progress in establishing peace and prosperity for his people.

Even in this changed context when I observe that there has been no improvement in the lot of my beloved fellow citizens, my brothers and sisters, I am very perturbed, very troubled and very anguished.

He said: "Even in this changed context when I observe that there has been no improvement in the lot of my beloved fellow citizens, my brothers and sisters, I am very perturbed, very troubled and very anguished."

The 239-year-old monarchy was overthrown by Maoist former rebels, who promised to improve law and order and make the people more prosperous.

But the government has reportedly failed to deliver on its promises, and seem unable to stop the increasing lawlessness that has taken hold of the impoverished Himalayan nation.

Supporters of the monarchy gathered outside the former king's home on his birthday, demanding the royal be reinstated.

They chanted: "Come back dear king. Save our nation."

Gyanendra smiled and waved as he greeted his fans, who lined up to shake his hand and give him flowers.
