A Mongolian crown stolen from a Stockholm museum in 1984 has been found in a Swedish police station.
The bejewelled silver headpiece has spent over 20 years accidentally stowed in the Swedish Police Service storage department.
The crown first went on display in the Museum of Ethnography in 1980, but just four years later, it mysteriously disappeared during a power cut.
Staff immediately filed a report with Interpol to prevent the resale of the crown overseas, but it was never found.
Last week, the puzzle was solved when workmen renovating a Stockholm police station found a bag that had been confiscated from a burglar over 20 years ago.
We would like to thank the national police service for housing the silver Mongolian crown for such a long time.
It contained the missing crown, along with silver cutlery and a selection of trophies.
Detectives called museum staff, who immediately identified the stolen treasure.
Museum chief Anders Björklund said in a statement: "We would like to thank the national police service for housing the silver Mongolian crown for such a long time."
The item has since been returned to the museum, where it is expected to go on display by the end of the month.
