Britain's Prince Andrew has yet to be investigated about hitting a policeman with his car.

The Duke of York - who was seen overtaking a queue of traffic before swinging at speed into Buckingham Palace in February - has reportedly still not been made to give a statement to police six weeks after the incident, where he knocked an unnamed policeman to the ground.

Friends of the victim - who was forced to take time off work with severe bruising - claim the knock has been "swept under the carpet" by police and the royal family.

A friend told the Sunday Mirror newspaper: "In any other traffic accident like this, the police would take statements from all the parties involved, but the impression is that Andrew has been let off lightly because of who he is.

Senior officers have told the victim to keep his mouth shut and not cause trouble. His colleagues are disgusted - the feeling is this is a cover-up because their superiors and the royals don't want all the details to come out.

Dai Davies, a former head of the Royal Protection Squad believes it was vital the prince be quizzed.

He said: "The duke is no different from the rest of us in that regard - only the queen is immune from prosecution."

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman insisted Andrew is not receiving special treatment over the allegation.

She said: "The traffic incident happened on a public road, so it is being investigated by the Metropolitan Police's traffic department in the normal way and we're awaiting the outcome of that investigation."
