Sweden's Prince Carl Philip will visit Galway for the finale of the Volvo Ocean Race.
The son of King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia is patron of the round the world boat race and has made plans to travel to the West of Ireland on July 7th and 8th where the 39,000 mile race will come to an end, the Royal Palace in Stockholm has confirmed.
John Killeen, President of Let's Do It Global, organisers of the nine-day festival to celebrate the finale, said Prince Carl Philip has been one of the Volvo Ocean Race's most enthusiastic supporters and he will be given a royal welcome by the people of Galway.
The 33-year-old prince previously revealed to Galway resident and former Battalion Officer William Raftery in Stockholm that he would attend the finale.
Mr. Raftery told the Galway Advertiser newspaper: "I told him where I was from and said to him, you should come to Galway some time. The Volvo Ocean Race is finishing here next month, to which he replied, 'Oh, but I will be there as I am patron of the race and attended the start in Alicante.'"
Let's Do It Global have organised a number of events to celebrate the nine-day festival. For more information go to www.volvooceanracegalway.ie
